South Pacific

The Waverley Lugar Brae Players, founded in 1959, recently put on an entertaining production of the classic World War 2 musical, ‘South Pacific’ at their ‘headquarters’ in the Church in the Market Place at Bondi Junction.

The classic musical was adapted from the Pulitzer Prize winning novel, ‘Tales of the South Pacific’ by James A Michener. As well as having many great tunes, put together by the talents of Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein, ‘South Pacific’ tells many stories, the primary story involving Emile de Becque, a frenchman who believed that he had found jhe perfect haven on the island, married an island girl, and prospered. Then came the war, the death of his wife and bitterness. With the thousands who were fighting in the islands came Ensign Nellie Forbush, a nurse from Little Rock, and love blossomed again.

Glen Stelzer did well in the lead role of Emile. Vanessa Bando gave a vivacious performance as Nellie Forbush. Other picks were Rebecca King as Liat, Tim Martin as Lt Jospeh Cable, Evelyn Foltyn as Bloody Mary and Julian Brn as the Big Dealer Luther Billis.

The South Pacific production team comprised director Marion Morrison, Musical Director Rod Mounjed, Choreographer Robyn Bevan, and Karen Granger as the Set and Lighting Designer.

There’s nothing like a good musical, put together by a committed Company, to boost the spirits. For the record my favourite tunes; ‘Some Enchanted Evening’, ‘There is Nothing Like A Dame’, ‘I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair’, and ‘Younger Than Springtime’.
