DREAM SCENARIO: A NEW YEAR’S TREAT

The first great film of 2024, DREAM SCENARIO.

A dream scenario, DREAM SCENARIO is a fantastic film, literally and figuratively, one with audacity and imagination, a film that flips things on their head.

Many are cult but few are chosen, and DREAM SCENARIO is so choice in its potency of articulating something fresh that its classic status is assured.

DREAM SCENARIO offers an immediate relevant social metaphor in its fame vs recognition frame. The cult of celebrity, cancel culture and the more absurd parameters of political correctness are caught in its complex yet completely entertaining context.

Shakespeare’s line “We are such stuff as dreams are made on is made” resonates in director Kristoffer Borgli’s screenplay where nebbish academic, Paul Matthews, suddenly becomes an international phenomenon when he starts appearing in seemingly everyone’s dreams.

There are more things in heaven and earth, than are dreamt of in your philosophy comes to mind as the mystery deepens and the manifestations evolve from the benign to the malignant.

Feted and fawned, Matthews soon finds himself vilified. Frustrated also that this fame was manufactured and not born of his research into herd mentality, a brilliantly ironic touch, and redolent of another Shakespeare line, “The very substance of the ambitious is merely the shadow of a dream”.

DREAM SCENARIO is another milestone in the career of Nicolas Cage whose portrayal of the bewildered biologist is up there with his best.

Julianne Nicholson as his supportive wife, Janet, also notches up a career highlight.

If you have enjoyed the scenarios of Charlie Kaufman (Adaptation, Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) you’ll embrace DREAM SCENARIO.

Otherwise, if these shadows have offended, think but this and all is mended, that you have but slumber’d here, while these visions did appear. And this weak and idle theme, no more yielding but a dream.
