Unrequited

There is a new Wayne Tunks play ‘Unrequited’ playing at the Newtown Theatre. Tunks is one of the most prolific local theatre writers, his plays always focus on the quirkiness in relationships.
Plays include such like ‘The Bridesmaid must die’ and ‘The Subtle Art of Flirting’.

I found ‘Unrequited’ to be up there with his best work. The play recounts the situations that a group of University graduate students find themselves in. One of the features of the play is the way that it spot on describes the way that young people get in to their social cliques.

Tunks characters ring true with strong performances by the cast.

Kate Maree Hoolihan gave a really solid performance in the central role of Gabby Perkins. She played a good natured woman who finds out the sting sometimes involved in romantic love. She offers her friend Jeremy a friendship with benefits, casual sex, only to see him go back to his ditzy ex, Brooke, well played by Christie Hayes.

Rick Cosnett gave a great performance as the very camp and comic Christian. Sure it was a bit over the top but it was a fun performance.

Catherine Kelleher played Christian’s best friend, Alana, who’s always hanging around him, drinking in bars, and complaining about how difficult it is to find any decent men. Kelleher gets to do a nude scene which she carries off with ease. The dynamics between the two characters lead to one of the play’s best scenes when Alana who has held a bit of a crush on Christian, misreads the signs so to speak, and greets Christian in the nude, much to Christian’s chagrin.

Verdict. Tunks’s ‘Unrequited’ flowed as sweet as a good bottle of red with Greg Hatton artfully directing the proceedings.
