SIX: A TUDOR FORCE

Rock shock mock Tudor, SIX is a spectacular and sublimely timely reclamation and recognition of the dethroned, discarded and a duo of decapitated women destined to known collectively as the six wives of Henry VIIII.

Divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived – Henry VIII was a plague on all his spouses, a despotic and sometimes homicidal husband, a state sanctioned domestic abuser.

Divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived is the opening number and serves as an explosive and informative introduction in both exposition and style.

SIX, a savage cabaret, sets forth to flip history, as this sextet of queens finally tell their story in exuberant and excoriating song and dance, leaving this throne upturned.

Smart, funny and contemporary, SIX is an unapologetic celebration- no reason to be sorry in this realm – of female empowerment packaged in a sassy, superlative musical spectacular.

Six fierce women; Katherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Catherine Howard and Catherine Parr given towering lyrics and pulsating beats, embodied by electric performers, Chloe Zuel, Karla Gare, Loren Hunter, Kiana Daniele, Courtney Monsma and Vidya Makan.

Their main circuit performances are powered and packed with lyrics laced with lacerating wit and dance moves to boot, and regally supported by a band led by musical director Claire Healy on keys, with Ali Foster on drums, Debbie Yap on guitar, and Jessica Dunn on bass.

Tim Deiling’s lighting is a right royal dazzle, and Gabriella Slade’s costumes consort to razzle a rock and roll remix with courtly couture, a pop pomp and choreographed circumstance that maintains the rage and keeps the entertainment supremely sovereign.

Created by Toby Marlow & Lucy Moss, SIX is a Tudor force that knocks his story for a six and reclaims the pitch for her story, the individual and the collective, of these majestic women.

SIX is on at Sydney Opera House until 5 March, as part of Sydney Festival
