THE RAID 2: BERANDAL

THE RAID 2

THE RAID 2: BERANDAL is the second in a series of Indonesian martial-arts action movie films, written and directed by Welsh born, Gareth Evans.

At the end of the previous movie in the series, the insanely brutal martial arts movie “The Raid: Redemption” (2011), Rama thought it was over. After fighting his way out of a building filled with gangsters and madmen – a fight that left the bodies of police and gangsters alike piled in the halls – rookie Jakarta cop Rama thought it was done and he could resume a normal life.

From the start of “THE RAID 2: BERANDAL” (2014) Rama (Iko Uwais) is an Indonesian POLICE SWAT member, with his family at risk. Rama has only one choice to protect his infant son and wife.

Rama goes deep undercover, in an attempt to enter the criminal underworld, via being imprisoned for two years. He enters into a lawless all-or-nothing scheme, so now begins a new odyssey of extreme and bloody ultra-violence, by taking on a new identity as the ultra-violent repeat offender Yuda. In prison Rama must gain the confidence of Uco (Arifin Putra) who is the only son of a prominent Jakarta gang kingpin named Bangun (Tio Pakusodewo). Rama successfully infiltrates the ranks of that ruthless Jakarta crime syndicate, and then exposes rampant police corruption. We see the blood-thirty battle between the Japanese yakuza, Indonesia mafia and corrupt police.

Rama’s pure physical prowess and his hectic combat skills are indeed an impressive sight. Gangsters are bludgeoned, hacked and slashed to pieces by a hoodie-wearing assassin (Very Tri Yulismanwho) who uses two baseballs and his metal baseball bat and expertly hits his targets, together with his sister a deaf woman Alicia / Hammer Girl (Julie Estelle) as a two claw-hammer wielding martial arts expert, that has to seen to be believed as to just what a female assassin can achieve.

THE RAID 2 has been filmed in Jakarta, Indonesia. Fully subtitled in English with almost every spoken word translated, and spoken in Indonesian, Japanese and Arabic. Running time is 148 minutes.

Japanese actors Ryuhei Matsuda, Kenichi Endo and Kazuki Kitamura, play the yakuza members in Jakarta, Indonesia. An all-star cast includes Iko Uwais, Julie Estelle, Yayan Ruhian, Donny Alamsyahn, Tio Pakusadewo, Arifin Putra, Alex Abbad and Oka Antara.

Unnecessarily violent with Horror Genre Close-ups, this movie is suitable only for those obsessed with repugnant epic spectacles drenched in blood, and many actors take far too long to die from the injuries received. Please do remember that overseas this movie was officially rated R for “sequences of strong bloody violence throughout, sexuality and language”.

OFLC Classification: R18+ (High impact bloody violence), 148 minutes running time.
