LEAH ANKETELL: ANIMAL INSTINCTS

Adam and Eve. A quirky work by Leah Anketell
Leah Anketell’s ‘Adam and Eve’, part of her current exhibition at Gallery V

ANIMAL INSTINCTS is the second Sydney exhibition by Leah Anketell. Fifteen of her paintings are in this exhibition at Gallery V in Woolloomooloo.

The cast of subjects include dogs, cats, rabbits, roosters and goldfish. Earlier works included cows. The works are striking in their clarity. Several are bemusing in their combination of dogs and plump goldfish. Leah does have a logical explanatory comment about that.

Still in her 20s and originally from Byron Bay, Leah was recently voted People’s Choice Winner at the prestigious Byron Arts Classic 2014. It is easy to see why as the quirky juxtaposition of animals and their evident emotions in clear colour and definite lines draws in the spectators.

Gallery V is an intimate gallery located at 41 Riley Street, Woolloomooloo, a short stroll from Hyde Park, or William Street. Being small allows for personal attention by the owner, Geoff Hirsh. The exhibition is on till 11 April 2014. Exhibition times are Mondays to Fridays between 9.30 and 5.30 pm, and Saturdays 12 to 3 pm. Phone 93602015.
