Ollie and the Minotaur

The cast of ‘Ollie and the Minotaur’

Duncan Graham’s play ‘Ollie and the Minotaur’ tells an evocative reunion story of three female friends.

The time is 1992 and the setting is a beach house. Three women in their late twenties meet up. They are former lovers, the brash Thea (Wendy Bos) and easy going Bec (Sarah Brokensha) who still share a bond through their love for Thea’s nine year old daughter, Ollie. They are joined by extroverted, outgoing Carla (Adriana Bonaccurso). As the gin gets drunk and the conversation goes deeper, a dark secret from the past is revealed, creating plenty of ripples within the group.

Graham’s reunion story, as directed by Sarah John, is told in a candid style. As the production photo so clearly shows what we see is three modern, credible, unpretentious women, very naturally portrayed by three fine actresses, hanging out together. Things start out light and breezy, however one soon gets the sense that there is a dramatic undertow that is sweeping along the characters.

Sarah John’s production featured a minimalist set; a couch, a coffee table and a kitchenette off stage, getting the audience to focus on the conflicts happening on stage. Through the play, which ran straight through under ninety minutes, nineties music flowed through the stereo.

‘Ollie and the Minotaur’ played downstairs at Belvoir from the 17th April to the 3rd May.
