My Stories Your Emails

British comedienne Ursula Martinez’s show ‘My Stories, Your Emails’ is a slick solo show.

Martinez’s show pivots around her famous Hanky Panky striptease act that she performed at the Montreal Comedy Festival and was subsequently illegally filmed and posted on the internet. Martinez became an instant celebrity and was inundated by emails, especially from guys.

Martinez starts her show standing at a lectern, and sharing observations and stories from her life. About half way through the fast paced hour long show Martinez actually plays the Montreal Festival clip. The show then segues into the heart of the show where Martinez moves across to the lectern on the other side of the stage and reads out loud a selection of these emails she has received to the audience. She creates a character for each of the correspondents, mainly through the use of different voices, and flashes a full size photo of them, that they provided, on the big screen behind her.

Reflecting on the show afterwards, it wasn’t any of Martinez’s jokes and anecdotes that came to mind. I kept on seeing the faces of some of the men, in particular, one guy who had these huge sad eyes. In the end, I’ll remember this show as a cautionary tale that there is no such as privacy on the internet, and never to use it as a plaything, for the imperviousness of cyberspace always rules!

Ursula Martinez’s ‘My Stories, Your Emails’ opened on Thursday 25th November and plays till Saturday December 4, 2010 at the Studio theatre, Sydney Opera House.
