Andrew Lloyd Webber and  Tim Rice’s classic musical JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOUR DREAMCOAT, which had its first amateur production in New York in 1970, has arrived at the Capitol Theatre after a  highly successful season in Melbourne.

Told entirely through song with the help of The Narrator leading us through the storyJOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOUR DREAMCOAT,  follows the story of Jacob’s favourite son  Joseph and his eleven brothers.

After being sold into slavery by the brothers, Joseph ingratiates himself with Egyptian noble Potiphar, but ends up in jail after refusing the  advances of Potiphar’s wife.

While imprisoned, Joseph discovers his ability to interpret  dreams, and he soon finds himself in front of the mighty but troubled showman, the Pharaoh.  As Joseph strives to resolve Egypt’s famine, he becomes Pharaoh’s right-hand man and  eventually reunites with his family.

Laurence Connor’s revival of this evergreen biblical musical is hugely entertaining, energised and colourful. The performances by the leading cast and the supporting ensemble, made even more special by the children performing in, were first class.

In the big three roles, sweet voiced five octave songstress Paulini was beguiling, Euan Fistrovic Doidge gave a very poised performance as Joseph and Trevor Ashley  really got the stage rocking as the Pharaoh.

JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOUR DREAMCOAT has been produced by Tim Lawson, directed by Laurence Connor, choreographed by Joann M Hunter, designed by Kathy Pineo with music supervision by John Rigby.

Ebullient Conductor Peter Rutherford led an excellent ten piece orchestra.

This production, once again, affirms that when Sydney theatregoers go to see a big musical in one of our leading  venues, they are going to enjoy a very high quality and impassioned production.  They are almost certain to go home buzzing!
