Gaslight

The Phoenix Theatre Company recently put on a production of the classic psychological thriller ‘Gaslight’ at Chatswood theatre. This classic psychological thriller was first performed in 1935 and has since received many stage and even film productions since.

In ‘Gaslight’ Jack Manningham works on slowly and deliberately trying to drive his wife mad. He has almost succeeded when help arrives in the form of former detective Ralph who believes Manningham to be a thief and a murderer. Helped by Bella, Rough proves Manningham’s true identity, and finally Bella achieves a few moments of sweet revenge for the suffering he has inflicted on her.

Tonya Wheatley put on a satisfying production which conveyed the chilling nature of the play. The play reminds one of those news accounts one hears every so often where someone in a vulnerable position has been manipulated and treated cruelly.

The cast performed well with, in the leading roles, Bruce Wyatt as Jack. Jennifer Jean Davis as Bella, and Tim Hunter as Inspector Rough. The set was designed by Murray Grelis, Peter Henson did the costumes, and Simon Dwyer the lights.
