FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL (2008) – WIDESCREEN 111 MINUTE CENSORED VERSION

FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL (2008) was beautifully filmed on location at the Turtle Bay Resort at 57-091 Kamehameha Highway, Kahuku, O’ahu, Hawaii, USA, and many other locations including Stage 29 at Universal Studios of 100 Universal City Plaza, Universal City, California, USA.

This amazingly clever rom-com written by Jason Segel who also stars as the musician Peter Bretter, has a highly fictionalised comedy storyline, making it as objective an experience as possible, and based upon the many many women he has loved during his lifetime. Peter Bretter goes to Hawaii, to get over his lost love, his TV celebrity ex-girlfriend Sarah Marshall (Kristen Bell).

However the ex-girlfriend turns up at the Turtle Bay Resort, with her “new boyfriend” the fictional-celebrity and very hip rock star British musician Aldous Snow (Russell Brand). Huge real-life male-objectification comedy romance, delicious character-driven dialogue, with now classic great one-liners, plus unexpected comedy situations, with perfect comic timing by the entire cast.

Sex, nudity, language, rated MA15+ so yes everything you expect to enjoy in a Judd Apatow produced romantic comedy that is clearly advertised as “MA15+ strong sex scenes, sexual references and coarse language”. Peter is rescued by the front desk hotel clerk, Rachel Jansen (Mila Kunis), and she invites Peter to a luau and to hang out, and then the mating game begins. Has lots of somethings to offend/entertain everyone.

Director Nicholas Stoller, shot much of the movie with 50mm lenses on 35mm cameras. By doing this and as a direct result, the image framing is said to mimic normal human vision, so you are not just watching the movie, you are also experiencing the movie.

Australia only has the 111 minute widescreen cinema version on DVD. Australia does not the 111 minute full screen version on DVD, plus the longer 118 minute DVD version is not sold in Australia – – – Extended DVD version has an extra duration of 413.8 seconds (= 6:54 minutes) and there are a total of twenty-two changes made, with alternative footage used seven times.  Assumes no change of the  original running times for NTSC film transfer onto  NTSC DVD  – and that the original running time will be reduced to  ninety-six perent for PAL film transfer  onto  PAL DVD – (  i.e. 118:0  = 113:28 )

However in 2021  if you have a FOXTEL pay-tv cable account, FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL is now showing only in the much longer 118 minute widescreen extended (i.e. unrated) version. Incredibly different unrated image/sound content to the officially rated MA15+ 111 minute cinema theatrical version, that now includes full frontal male nudity. FOXTEL provides no customer warning notice, that the movie content has been selectively edited to add the extra six plus minutes of running time.
