Find Me A Lawyer

Brigid O’Sullivan and Mark McCann in ‘Find Me A Lawyer’

It’s time for another light-heated, fast paced comedy from Tony Laumberg with his latest show ‘Find Me A Lawyer’ currently playing at the Newtown Theatre.

Valentino Arico is in good form playing the manic, bungling lead, entrepreneur Marty Fish who has come up with a sur-fire way of making a motza of money. Marty has organised for a Supreme Court Judge from America, Elizabeth Overschott, to deliver the keynote address at a legal conference he has organised. The tickets cost a small fortune!

Right from the starts, Marty finds the fates against him. The Judge is knocked unconscious in an accident that takes place at the airport and suffers amnesia. Marty brings the Judge back home and lies her down on the sofa. She is a complete write-off. Marty panics, how will she ever be able to give the keynote address tomorrow?! Marty goes in search of miracles!

Trudi Boatwright gives a well judged perforrmance playing Marty’s wife, Sarah. She plays an unhappy wife who is tired of her husband’s ambitious plans that never come to anything, and who isn’t paying her any attention romantically.

Rosane McNamara goes to town in the most colourful role as the American Supreme Court Justice, Judge Elizabeth Overschott. She plays her character as if Overschott has had a major nervous breakdown with her thoughts and gestures flying in all directions!

Brigid O’Sullivan, with her hair pullled across to one side, is frenetic and overflowing as Marty’s sister and accountant Maddy who is the bearer of bad news, rushing in to tell her brother that he owes the tax department a cool million dollars.

Mark McCann is perfectly cast in the very funny role of plumber Jack who is brought in to fix a leak and manages to make more of a botch of everything. He’s first entrance with his bum hanging our of his daggy shorts is a classic!

Richard Cotter, Tony Laumberg’s ever-trusty director, plays the show with a sure comical, farcical touch. The pace is fast and Cotter’s gift for choosing great little music grabs between scenes is a stand-out. Timothy Carter’s minimalistic set works well.

You’ll find yourself having a good laugh if you head to Big Splash’s production of Tony Laumberg’s tenth play ‘Find Me A Lawyer’, playing the Newtown theatre corner King and Bray streets Wednesdays to Sundays until Sunday 4th September, 2011.
