Feelgood

We walk in to British playwright Alistair Beaton’s play ‘Feelgood’ as two spin doctors are preparing the Prime Minister’s speech to the annual Labor conference. We walk out after the Prime Minister, known as DL, has delivered his much awaited speech to the party faithful. For two hours Beaton entertains audience with his acerbic portrait of contemporary British politics.

Richard Cotter’s pacy production has a deft, light touch as Beaton’s barbs hit their targets. Anthony Hunt impresses in the leading role as DL’s press secretary, Eddie. Amongst the supporting cast, the two actresses, Annette van Roden as the rogue journalist Liz, and Amy Anderson as DL’s driven secretary Asha, shone the brightest.

Veteran designer Tony Youlden’s set impressively featured two ‘complete’ locations, the Prime Minister’s office suite and Liz’s hotel bedroom.

My favourite moment from the production…The opening scene after interval. Liz is in her hotel room ringing reception trying to get her meal delivered to her room. She is unable to talk to a ‘real person’, and is continuously being put on hold and redirected. Oh, haven’t we all been there!

‘Feelgood’, presenting a cynical, Machiavellian world that unfortunately we are all only too familiar with, plays the New Theatre, Newtown until April 17.
