The Company singing GASTON

A Disney musical on stage or screen represents a formula which has survived the test of time, regardless of the tale’s age. Miranda Musical Society’s production ticks the important boxes in this regard.

From the overture and throughout, Alan Menken’s challenging Beauty and the Beast score was suitably played and supported the cast admirably.

The adequately portrayed village and castle sets were well lit and set changes were mostly smooth. The well-trained ensemble of children and adults sparkled in lavish costuming. All trademark Disney tableaux were energetically performed, albeit suffering some cramped moments during full-company blocking.

Natasha Hoeberig’s Belle had the correct balance of smooth movement, loyalty, passionate drive when needed. She has an elegant vocal palette to work with. ‘A Change in Me’ from Act II displayed her skill for grading vocal colours.

Andrew Syme’s Beast costume allowed good range of acting. He delighted dramatically and delivered exquisite expressive moments of baritone song. His Act I finale, ‘If I Can’t Love Her’ was powerful.

Lachlan O’Brien and Tim Wotherspoon shone with consistent characterisation of both Gaston and Lumière. This was solid Disney caricature, and they led the ensemble capably at all times.

This is an entertaining and successful attempt at a major Disney musical. Join the Miranda Musical Society. You will be glad to be their guest.
