VAUDEVILLIA @ THE SLIDE DARLINGHURST

Strings On Fire

You are in  the city…it has been a hard day at work,..in fact it has been a tough  week…It’s Thursday night..You just want  to have some wind down time…grab a hearty meal…have a few wines…catch a show…have a few laughs.

VAUDEVILLIA, billed as cabaret on the edge of the universe, well you have to have a concept these days, this current show at the chic, inner city cabaret venue, might just do the trick for you.

The venue has a lovely, intimate feel about it. All the tables are close to the stage, so wherever they seat you will be fine.

The cuisine at Slide has always been first class…It has always been one of the strengths of this venue…You are in for a treat..The three course meal that you will be served will linger on in your taste buds for quite some time after…(especially the creme brulee desert!).

The show kicks off after a mouth watering entree- tuna fillets was my choice. Jonathon Holmes held fort at the piano.. with some zippy, witty, Noel Coward like numbers and showing a Phil Scott like talent with the keys…Over the course of the night he promoted his new CD…One lucky guy in the audience who was celebrating his birthday  got to take home his CD for zip.

Holmes had top billing however the stage was filled with plenty of other attractions too… dueling, sensual violinists…a madcap magician who  showcased some great balancing tricks especially when handing a pole with some very fast moving saucers on top.  There was puppetry…a huge, inflated, over sized clown..Plenty of smoke effects to add that edge  of atmosphere….

One couldn’t have a show like this without a sexy, brazen young chanteuse… I  can’t recall her stage name but she fitted the bill.. she established a good, sharp repartee with the audience, especially with a couple canoodling in the  ‘front seats’. At one time she claimed to be  the ghost of Judy Garland. Not sure why that was?! What worked for me most was when she did some  great bluesy numbers like It’s A Man’s World, If You Go Away..

So there you have it…A breezy dinner and show, a little rough around the edges but that was part of it’s charm.

VAUDEVILLIA is  on again tonight as it is on 25/10 and 29/11. You can either do dinner and show- my recommendation- or just catch the show. For bookings 89151899 or www.slide.com.au.
