Curatorial+Co. will present two concurrent exhibitions at the Gallery from 9 – 17 December, with new work by Southern Highlands-based artist Lily Cummins reflecting on mental health and the role art can play as therapy, and its largest exhibition to date with over 50 artists offering small works just in time for Christmas.

Presented in a setting with furniture by Vampt Vintage creating a warm and personal living room feel, visitors will be able to enjoy and experience the works in this unique gallery space that offers a one-of-a-kind mix of art and design.

Curated inside the staged living room of vintage furniture within the gallery, Lily Cummins new suite of work, Weirdswas created during recent sessions of art therapy in her hospital room while being treated for a mental illness. The resulting works have a childlike innocence to them and were instrumental to Cummins’s recovery.

Lily Cummins said: “This work came about during a moment of crisis for me. A time when my depression reared its head and roared. I began to dissociate, which essentially means to disconnect or separate from your body. A disconnection occurs and there is lack of continuity between thoughts, memories, surroundings, actions and identity. I felt as though a fracture had occurred and I felt myself shift in time and space. Memories began to slip away faster than I could hold onto them.

“Time began to move differently, I felt as though I was standing still and everything else was moving fast. The only way I could remain in my body was to draw and make work, it enabled me to remove it from my mind, to make it physical and to confront it. It is a privilege to be able to create and to share this work.”

For’Darlings’, the Gallery presents its largest show to date, showcasing the work of all its represented artists as well as some invited guests. Featuring small works across a range of mediums including sculpture, painting, mixed media, photography and ceramics, the exhibition will be full of treasures for a positive send off to the year.

Sophie Vander, Founder and Director of Curatorial+Co. said“After this whirlwind year we’re excited to send it off with an exhibition featuring all of our artists as well as Lily Cummins’s incredible works that show that out of struggle can come beauty. We hope to offer our visitors a little bit of cheer ahead of Christmas, whether they come in to browse the art, pick up a one-of-a-kind gift, or check out the beautiful furniture by our friends at Vampt Vintage, all are welcome!”

The Gallery is located at Studio 1, 175 Cleveland Street, Redfern
