Keeping up with the Jones was exhausting, and is it turns out, it was exhausting to Jones.
In THE STONES AND BRIAN JONES, renowned documentary film maker Nick Broomfield uncovers the true and, yes, tragic story of Brian Jones, the creative force behind what would become the world’s greatest rock band The Rolling Stones.
Through interviews and previously unseen footage, Broomfield sheds light on Jones’ life, from his wild performances to his early, more private moments.
Founding father of the The Rolling Stones, Jones rebelled in every way possible against the straight laced conservative father, from not pursuing a proper job, to irresponsibly siring offspring. But he did have the good sense of hiring Mick Jagger as the front man of his band.
Broomfield explores Jones’ unstable home life, rivalry within the band, and the profound influence of the 1960s’ sexual, fashion, societal, and musical revolutions. This documentary provides a deeper understanding of Jones’ legacy and his pivotal role in shaping the band’s early sound and spirit.
Highlights of this insightful and tragic film include interviews with the cool and collected Bill Wyman, a staunch Jones loyalist, who testifies that Jones was no wordsmith, like Jagger and Richards, but his musical sensibility was acute and demonstrates the acumen that elevates many famous tracks.
There are also revealing interviews with Brian’s former girlfriends, who share stories of his tumultuous relationships. There is hurt, regret, but largely a feeling of happy to have known him, and a desire to understand the man.
THE STONES AND BRIAN JONES ends on a sad note of a father’s regret for a relationship soured, a reconciliation denied, the obvious pain of a parent predeceasing a child.
