THE CONFESSIONS OF JEREMY PERFECT @ FLIGHT PATH THEATRE

It’s pants off and masks on as the few remaining rehearsals for THE CONFESSIONS OF JEREMY PERFECT march on for an intended August 27 opening at Flight Path Theatre, Marrickville.

Preparing a sex comedy during the pandemonium of a pandemic has provided plenty of challenges for director Richard Cotter and his cast.

The play was to have been produced last March but State sanctioned Covid restrictions closed down the production.

However, cast and crew collaborated to meet weekly via Zoom to keep the project alive and once restrictions were relaxed, the team were able to reconvene in person to kindle a restart.

Social distancing within a scenario that has a number of sex scenes and close quarter combat is as incongruous as a condom in a fertility clinic, but the committed cast and crew have continued to adhere to Sandra Fairthorne’s story of duplicitous sex and the need to breed whilst being conscientious of current safe practice.

THE CONFESSIONS OF JEREMY PERFECT is an incongruous, ironic title about an imperfect family, each striving for an unattainable perfection.

Perfect casting sees Gil Balfas as Jeremy, an anxiety riddled writer married with child to Rosa, a shrink, wrapped up in passive aggressive control of her spouse, played by Mel Day.

The couple and their infant share a house with Rosa’s sister, Annie, a nurse, played by Emma Dalton.

The arrival of Jeremy’s brother, Joe (Josh Shediak) and his clucky, vivacious girlfriend, Simone (Andrea Mudbidri) sparks a conflagration of desire and duplicity, a bubbling cauldron of double trouble, strife torn sex culminating in a comedy of eros.

As with most nourishing theatre, THE CONFESSIONS OF JEREMY PERFECT shows that keeping life tidy can be desperate and rare, always difficult and seldom total. Life is messy – deal with it.
