SYDNEY FESTIVAL : THE ARTIST : A MESMERISING PERFORMANCE

[usr 4]

The funny man on stage alone for over an hour kept the packed Everest Theatre audience in awe, children and adults alike. He was New Zealand’s Thom Monckton, playing an artist attempting to paint a canvas. But there’s a drip from the ceiling, the picture frame isn’t square and he can’t reach the paints on a high shelf – all a wonderful set up for a mimed comedy.

Monckton trained for two years at New Zealand’s circus school CircoArts and two years at the physical theatre school Lecoq in Paris. This work is choreographed by  Sanna Silvennoinen of Finland, where Monkckton is now based.

Part physical theatre, part comedy and all mimed, this is  wonderful Festival of Sydney fare. It’s only on until Sunday, January 22 so PLEASE get a ticket. Take the oldies. Take the kids. It’s just wonderful. You won’t come away from the show singing a tune (it’s mime!) but you will come out of the theatre feeling on top of the world as the comedic images of the loveable bumbling artist keep appearing before you.

18 – 22 JANUARY
