SWINGING 60’S FASHION: NO SKIRT TOO HIGH

It doesn’t get more entertaining that 60’s fashion!  Cavalcade of History and Fashion  will present a talk and fashion showcase from  the Swinging 60s .  Featuring  a selection of gowns from this era – miniskirts, cocktail frocks, little black dress, paper dresses, beachwear, underwear and nightwear.  Examples from the 60s collection are carried amongst the audience, allowing a closer look at pieces as commentary highlights the background stories! Hear the fascinating stories of the time and the women who wore these gowns.

The swinging 60s was an era of prosperity and rebellion for the young who developed a new and very different interest in fashion, music and nightclubs. After a decade of cinched waists, full skirts and impeccable hair and makeup, many fashion traditions were broken in an act of rebellion, mirroring the momentous social and political changes of the decade.

Fashion became fun, designed by the young for the young and broke away from the exclusivity of haute couture. It was the era where no skirt was too short and no beehive too high.

Today we can still thank Jean Shrimpton for bare legs and ‘that’ white mini, Mary Quant for mod prints, Audrey Hepburn and her LBD, Twiggy’s pixie cut and original IT girl Edie Sedgwick for lashings of eyeliner, chandelier earrings and sheer black tights!

This an extremely popular presentation and fundraising event for the Friends of the Gallery.  All funds raised go toward restoration projects managed by Friends of the Gallery.

The Cavalcade of Fashion and History  will present SWINGING 60‘s at  Penrith Regional Gallery & The Lewers Bequest, River Road Emu Plains,  2 pm Saturday 26 May 2018.
