As I was watching Back to Back’s- Australia’s premiere theatre company working with disabilities- new production SUPER DISCOUNT I kept on hearing British singer/songwriter Ray Davies’s classic song, CELLULOID HEROES.

‘Everybody’s a dreamer/and everybody’s a star/and everybody’s in show business/it doesn’t matter who you are.’

The plot to SUPER DISCOUNT features a group of disabled actors and one ‘regular’ actor as they audition and rehearse for a play about their passion for superheroes.

The play, devised and directed by Bruce Gladwin and starring Mark Dean, Simon Laherty, Sarah Mainwaring, Scott Price, Brian Tilley and David Woods has a lightness of touch and many comic moments however the pathos is never far behind…

Wouldn’t it be great to be a superstar? To have power and control? To be able to live a life without limits where everything is possible?

These yearnings coming from people whose lives have been so restricted by disability….

‘I wish my life was a non-stop Hollywood movie show/A fantasy world of celluloid visions and heroes/Because celluloid heroes never feel any pain/and celluloid heroes never die.’

The dream of Everyman…

Laden with pathos and irony and PAIN, Back to Back theatre’s world premiere of SUPER DISCOUNT opened at Wharf 1, Sydney Theatre Company on Wednesday September 25 and runs until  Saturday October 15, 2013.
