ST MARY’S CHOIR AND SINFONIA AUSTRALIS PRESENT FAVOURITE CHRISTMAS CAROLS

What could be more ethereal and heavenly as a boys choir singing in a perfectly acoustic spot such as St Mary’s Cathedral.

Listening to the choir I was reminded of the Vienna Boys Choir who were singing in Sydney;s Town Hall as news of World War 2 broke out. All twenty choristers were stranded in Australia and never went back to Europe. As of 2004 nine were still living. I could not find a more up to date reference.

Speaking of history the St Mary’s Cathedral Choir is celebrating its 201st anniversary this year. It is recognised as the oldest musical ensemble in Australia, having been founded in 1818.

24 boy choristers sing with 12 professional adult singers to make up Australia’s only fully professional Cathedral Choir.

Lovers of choral music will have an opportunity to hear the full choir together with choral works by Bach, Handel and Rutter together with beloved traditional carols.

The 7pm concert tomorrow (Friday) is sold out but there may be seats at the earlier 11am concert. For booking go to www.cathedralchoir.sydney/accc or 82562222.
