THE 2022 SHORT AND SWEET WINNERS ARE –

The ‘biggest little play festival in the world’ has concluded its 20th successful year in Sydney with a sell-out Gala Awards finale during October 2022.

The hit franchise – SHORT AND SWEET – was founded in Sydney’s inner west 21 years ago and now exported to the world – always showcasing the ‘best of the fest’ at the Tom Mann Theatre in Surry Hills and followed up with the annual awards. Fittingly, it concluded just as Short+Sweet Hollywood finals commence – half a world away.

Best Production Judges’ Choice was local writer, actor-director Kate Jirelle’s alternately joyful and moving “To Those I Left Behind” – a tribute to the loyalty and love of teachers for their students and their profession. Directed by St Clair’s Jirelle, it starred herself, Parramatta’s Annette van Roden and Tricia Youlden of Kings Cross.

Best Script and Best Production People’s Choice (audience voted) awards went to the quirky, feel-good “Flat Meat Society” by Tom Coash (US), directed by Emma Carolina-Woolf (West Pennant Hills) and starring Booke Ryan (Camperdown) as a West Virginia woman on her way to fame and fortune – but losing the love of her life – as she perfects a very unconventional style of cooking . . .

Best Director award went to Ian Fletcher of Emu Plains whose hilarious “Oh Nanna!” featured an all-western Sydney team: writer Nicole Smith (Kings Langley) director Fletcher, Rosie Crossing of Blaxland (as a daring, sexy granny.), with Rebecca Fletcher (Emu Plains), Ken Fletcher (Penrith), Tayah Gulyas (Cranebrook) and Aurel Vasilescu (St Clair). “Nanna has more fun and games than retirement on her mind . . . and . . . on the web.”

Honoured as inductees to the Actors’ Circle for fine performances were Camperdown’s Brooke Ryan (Flat Meat Society), Lilyfield’s Olga Tamara (Unreasonable Situations), 18-year-old Ginger Fitzhardinge of Balgowlah (Best Kept Secret), Brendan McBride and Beacon Hill’s Christine Greenough (both for Bus Stop).

Other finalists featured were Tempestuous, The Last Taboo and (by invitation, as it could not attend the semi-finals) Red Yellow Blue by the late young talent Joseph Atkins. His mother, celebrated dancer, actor and choreographer Sheree da Costa (Avalon), directed the piece in which St Clair’s Kate Jirelle also appeared, alongside Northmead’s Aiden McKenzie (friend and collaborator of the writer). “A couple negotiate the morning after a ‘messy’ date.”.

In congratulating winners, all participants and thanking his production colleagues, SHORT AND SWEET Festival Director Nick Hardcastle said this year’s festival was “a triumph of creativity, inspiration – and perspiration. – over adversity”.

“After two years of Covid-19 and last year’s successful – but five times rescheduled – SHORT AND SWEET festival, it has been hugely satisfying to bring this magical internationally loved fest back to its home in Sydney and enthusiastic audiences. We all look forward to the next exciting adventure . . . ten minutes at a time.”
