The clarinet takes the spotlight in this concert of deeply moving and lyrical chamber music.
Busoni’s lesser-known Suite for Clarinet and String Quartet in G minor is filled with beautiful lyricism and driving rhythms that display a Romantic musical language but is looking towards the future.
When composer Ian Munro first heard David Rowden perform Songs from the Bush, he admired his interpretation. Drawing on Indigenous music and Australian folk songs as the foundation of the work, Munro has crafted a lyrical, tender and moving piece of music for clarinet quintet, recently recorded by Omega on their ABC Classics album.
Also included is Mozart’s String Quartet No. 17, aptly nicknamed ‘The Hunt’ due to the hunting-call motif that opens the work.
In addition, Omega will perform the world premiere of Cyrus Meurant’s Concertino for Clarinet and Strings.
The Omega Ensemble comprises Artistic Director David Rowden (clarinet)
with Emma Jardine (violin), Vivien Jeffrey (violin), Neil Thompson (viola) and Paul Stender (cello)
