OF MICE AND MEN: CAMPBELLTOWN THEATRE GROUP

OF MICE AND MEN finds a Home on the Campbelltown stage at the Town Hall Theatre.  Campbelltown Theatre Group is bringing to life one of the world’s most compelling tales of friendship and survival, OF MICE AND MEN.

Written and adapted for the stage by Nobel Prize-winning author John Steinbeck, OF MICE AND MEN is one of the finest pieces of polarizing literature in history, serving as a striking indictment of how we treat our disenfranchised fringe dwellers, our migrant peoples and our most vulnerable citizens.

The cast is comprised of nine men, a dog and one woman from all over Western Sydney, from Picton to Penrith, and will deliver the most powerful piece of theatre you will see this year.

Felicity Burke, Director of Steinbeck’s iconic drama, chuckles when asked about the one female role in the show. “The woman gets the short shift. She isn’t even given a name, she’s known as Candy’s wife.” Erin Middleton (Campbelltown local actress) plays the role and is called a tart, a LuLu and a tramp. “Mainly because she is lonely and wants to talk to someone and the only people are the men working on the farm, so she is branded,” explained Burke. “The treatment of women, disability and racism are all themes in the play.

Steinbeck’s play was written in 1937 and the story it tells is applicable in 2018. That’s because times change, but people don’t,” said Burke. “In some ways we have moved forward in our treatment of people but there is still a way to go. People still dream of being independent, getting a fair go and being accepted. Of Mice and Men explores our needs to hope and dream in spite of all odds. In other words, our humanity.”

OF MICE AND MEN from Campbelltown Theatre Group [Facebook] plays October 19 – November 3 at Campbelltown Town Hall Theatre.
