NTlive STRAIGHT LINE CRAZY – Robert Moses built 627 miles of straight roads by mimicking the Roman Empire maxim – “the shortest road distance between two places is a straight road” – the Roman Empire used a plumb line device known as a GROMA to be able to built straight roads. Supposedly to improve the lives of each and every New York City worker, Robert Moses created car only access to Long Island Beaches, created useful new infrastructure including new parks and new bridges, plus built just so many straight straight expressway roads.
Set in a government office in Manhattan, New York City during 1920s to 1960s. Robert Moses was a New York State government employee, a public servant ( New York state architect for forty years ) in the US state with some of the most corrupt politicians that money could buy – and not a mention what money could buy via slum clearance and the subsequent building of THE PROJECTS. Totally enjoyable journey through the life and times of Robert Moses. Stunning masterclass performance by Ralph Fiennes starring as Robert Moses, just magical.
A fine and seasoned ensemble cast, and special mention needs to be made of both Siobhán Cullen as Finnuala Connell plus Danny Webb as Governor Al Smith, providing delicious memorable performances, also discussed at length after the performance.
The play STRAIGHT LINE CRAZY written by David Hare and directed by Nicholas Hytner, is a very fast-moving 150 minutes plus the one interval. Definitely need to make time to read the hardcover 1,296 page book to discover all the amazing events the playwright could not fit into the three hours. Based on Robert A. Caro’s “The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York” the 1975 Pulitzer Prize-winning biography. Highly Recommended.
