MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING is William Shakespeare’s famous comedy delight, the delicious mistaken identity rom-com, now perfectly set at the fabulous and beautiful Art Deco Hotel Messina, on the Italian Riviera in the 1930s. Anna Fleischle, has created a truly magnificent set for the Hotel Messina.
Director Simon Godwin’s award-winning productions of Romeo and Juliet, Twelfth Night, Antony and Cleopatra, are now joined by his MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING.
Immediately reminded of 1930s Hollywood screwball comedies with sight-gags galore, and full use is made of lower/upper revolves available at the Lyttelton Theatre, with fast clever set changes. When required, below-stage boxes quickly rise, containing a powder room for three females, on stage left OR mens steam room with four bath tubs, on stage right. The hotel staff also appear/disappear through four of the six, little doorways as located in the two wings. Strangely, the original 1600s names of some of the characters, have been replaced with 1930s names.
The onstage quintet as seen the upstairs balcony (upper revolve) provides all the music written by Michael Bruce, and accompanies the one 1930s styled crooner song duet. YES there is a 1930s Busby Berkeley styled dance routine with tonnes of feathers, at the masked dance “Beneath The Sea Ball”. The whole cast delivers a very entertaining/ engaging/ stylish Broadway dance musical finale. Highly Recommended. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
