MINDING MADNESS: VERBATIM THEATRE FROM THE CHILDREN OF PARENTS WITH MENTAL ILLNESS

Minding Madness; a showcase of verbatim theatre.                                                                                              Photography Wayne Mitchell. Make up Veronica Colvin.

MINDING MADNESS: It is most often kept secret when children have a parent who is mentally ill; unfortunately, secrets increase loneliness and decrease visibility within our society.

MINDING MADNESS sets out to bring marginalised stories, of
children who have parents with Mental Illness, to a stage and
into the public arena. Simone Smith, Marketing Assistant of this
Project, is also one of the Story Contributors, she explains: “I am
tired of my voice being silenced I want to be able to share with an
engaged audience my story of the challenges I faced as a child.

Based word-by-word on interviews with adults who have shared their personal childhood stories, Joy Roberts, has devised a verbatim script, which is being married with Physical Theatre delivery.

Directed by Corinna Galliano, exploring the spoken words through action, with an ensemble of actors, delving deep into raw childhood experiences and emotions. Cormac Costello one of the five ensemble actors believes: “the use of a Verbatim Theatre style will allow these childhood unfiltered real experiences to have their day in the sun.”

The cast and crew are all trained and experienced theatre creatives, amongst them are a high percentage of individuals who themselves had in childhood parents experiencing Mental Illness. Joy Roberts, Producer and Writer at Improvising Change says the goal is to represent personal stories truthfully; creating an enabling stage that advocates and allows individuals to bring their voices safely into the public arena.

MINDING MADNESS from Improvising Change [Facebook] showcases for one night only, on Thursday 18th October 2018, 7:30 PM at Giant Dwarf  Theatre,  Redfern.

The show hopes to raise awareness and make an impact that will benefit children who are currently struggling with similar situations and includes screening of “I am still your Child” doco film by Megan Durnford, exploring three stories of childhood with Mentally Ill parents.
