MAGDALENA MIRA AT BUTCHER’S BREW BAR

Butcher’s Brew Bar, Dulwich Hill

It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening of Latin jazz with
singer Magdalena Mira at the quirky Butcher’s Brew Bar
in Dulwich Hill. The performance was part of the The
Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival 2022. She was
ably assisted by the impressive pianist Gavin Ahearn, cool
drummer Ben Kidson and the versatile Peter Gray on electric
bass.

Magdalena Mira has a lovely clear voice and sings with warmth
and emotion, mostly in Spanish but also entertained the intimate
crowd in English and Portuguese. She brings her delightful style
to songs such as What a Difference a Day Makes, Bye Bye Blackbird
and Leonard Cohen’s Treaty. Regardless of the language she was
singing in, the passion and emotion in Magdalena’s voice, in her
hands and in her dancing was immediate and captivating. Dancing
in such a confined space was a challenge and it would be
interesting to see her in a larger venue. Her repertoire includes
songs from Chile, Peru and Brazil and these covered a variety of
styles ranging from bolero to funk.

Magdalena was joined on stage by some very talented guest
performers, including violinist David Greenwood-Sanchez. His
delightful additions helped made this a truly memorable evening.
Other singers brought Mexican and Brazilian sentiments and helped
create a vibrant party atmosphere.

Butcher’s Brew Bar is a delightful small bar in Dulwich Hill. The
bohemian decor and varied drinks menu make it a very enticing
venue. Food is supplied by local eateries. Some you can order at
the bar or there are numerous takeaway options in the local area.

Magdalena Mira was playing as part of the Sydney International
Women’s Jazz Festival 2022, which runs until 5th November.
Magdalena will be performing again at the Hurstville Entertainment
Centre on 12th November. Highly recommended.
