Wollongong venue The Music Lounge will host jazz vocalist Lillian Albazi and her four-piece jazz band on Thursday 9 December, as part of a tour launching her debut album, After-Image.
Recognised as an exciting new voice in Australian jazz, Albazi came to national prominence at the age of 22 at the 2016 Melbourne International Jazz Festival. Since then, she has toured extensively, playing at festivals and venues including MONA, Devonport Jazz Festival and Melbourne Recital Centre.
Recorded at Rolling Stock Recording Rooms by Myles Mumford and mastered by Adam Dempsey, After-Image features deft takes on classic and contemporary jazz standards, executed with wit, playfulness and sombre romanticism.
“An after-image is the impression left on the closed eyelid – an impression of a piece of music filtered through someone else. Over time, the after-image might distort and change, leaving you with a sentiment, a feeling or just the framework of what was,” explains Albazi.
“For this reason, it feels a perfect analogy for the re-interpretation and arrangements of the standards on the album, presenting the listener with an after-image of the familiar. Seeing things through my eyes, listening to my after-images”
Guest musician on the album, composer and pianist Tony Gould (AM), had high praise for the vocalist: “Lillian Albazi has the qualities of a very fine artist – a beautiful voice, excellent presence and commitment to her art.”
For this tour, Lillian is backed by four of Melbourne’s most in-demand young musicians, Luke Andersen (drums), Kade Brown (piano), Oscar Neyland (Double Bass) and Shaun Rammers (Tenor Sax).
