Have you heard of Jack Carty? If you’re a Country and Western fan, then perhaps you have. I haven’t but I wish I had. He’s an Aussie who has recently come back from 2 years spent living, recording, writing and performing in the UK and Europe. One of the reasons he’s returned to his homeland (he’s a Bellingen NSW boy) is because his wife is expecting their first child.
Actually this EP album, comprising 5 songs written and recorded by Carty, is more Country than Western. Perhaps that is the reason I have taken a liking to it. Which reminds me of the joke in the hilarious movie The Blues Brothers when the saloon owner is asked whether they did Country and Western and he replies “We do both Country AND Western!”
Be that as it may…what we have here are 4 very slow-tempoish songs with soul-searching lyrics and one up-tempo, bombastic offering which will appeal to the rock-and-roll aficionados. The low tempo songs are Oh, Imagination, Why the Universe Expands, It’s a Lovely Day to be Outside and My Starry Sky. The latter has a longer than usual guitar- introduction which, if anything, proves that Carty can play the thing. The bombastic track, which is track 2, is entitled Welcome to the World, which methinks is a forerunner to the momentous event awaiting Mr. and Mrs Jack Karty. Although I hope it isn’t as bombastic as the track!
Carty was supposed to have toured Australia with Katie Noonan but alas, recent events have meant he has had to stay at home practising his trade.
The World, When it’s Sleeping will be released nationally on April 24 through Ditto Music.
