GHOST QUARTET: HAUNTING SONG CYCLE

Don’t be afraid of the dark, it’s part of the maker’s mark.

GHOST QUARTET is an exquisite song cycle, tunes, lyrics and text by Dave Malloy that weaves a certain magic through music: keyboard, strings and percussion and the human voice, an intoxicating alchemy of sight and sound and style.

On entering the space, you are met with a cosy cave of a set with Persian rugs and knick-knacks including a groovy sleek skull in sunglasses, an old camera and other assorted ephemera and curiosities. This warm and welcoming Aladdin’s den play pen vibe from production designer, Jodi Hope, invites anticipation of a theatrical adventure, an anticipation that delivers and does not disappoint.

Astrology and astronomy, spirits bottled and ethereal, combine, entwine and unravel in a sequence of narratives purloining Edgar Allan Poe’s Fall of the House of Usher, stories from Scheherazade and The Arabian Nights and the spectre of Thelonius Monk!

Surreal and palpable, GHOST QUARTET strums the soul strings and excites the senses. At one stage, we are pitched into pitch black, light deprived accentuating the acoustics, the aural and the oral, creating a dense invisible gravitational pull that is breathtakingly tangible.

The physical quartet consists of Cameron Bajraktarevic-Hayward, Musical director, David Butler, Hany Lee and Willow Sizer, a fab four forming an effervescent ensemble of thrilling virtuosity. Through them every lyric can be felt on the tongue and the palate, every beat in the ear and running along the spine.

Kudos to Director Brandon Pape, Lighting Designer, Sidney Younger and Sound Designer, Evan Drill for coordinating, coalescing and consolidating this sensuous and melancholy tender show.

GHOST QUARTET plays The Hayes till February 1. Don’t miss it.
