The UK’s leading producer of world-class opera, the English National Opera (ENO), present their 2015 season of magical performances in Australia cinemas for the very first time as part of the ENO Screen season.

Performed in English by the stars of the ENO, productions are filmed live at the London Coliseum theatre in stunning multi-camera HD to capture the distinctive majesty of the ENO performances.

Peter Konwitschny’s celebrated production of Verdi’s tragic masterpiece La Traviata, cuts to the very heart of the opera’s themes of passionate love and tragic death with a modern and uncluttered staging, and a running time of less than two hours.

Making her UK debut as Violetta is soprano Elizabeth Zharoff stars alongside ENO Harewood Artist Ben Johnson as Alfredo and acclaimed baritone Anthony Michaels-Moore as Alfredo’s father, Giorgio Germont.

La Traviata tells the moving story of how the beautiful but fragile courtesan Violetta is coerced into sacrificing her one hope of personal happiness for the sake of her lover’s reputation. A tragic and resonant tale of society and morality, Verdi’s masterpiece combines compelling characters with hugely powerful, moving and instantly recognisable melodies, making it one of the most emotionally engaging and popular operas of all time.

The 2015 ENO Screen season will present further productions later this year:- Gilbert and Sullivan’s much-loved comic opera The Pirates of Penzance directed by renowned filmmaker Mike Leigh in July; radical Spanish theatre director Calixto Bieito’s acclaimed production of Bizet’s vibrant and passionate classic Carmen mid August; and the most significant British opera in more than 200 years, Benjamin Britten’s devastating tragedy Peter Grimes in September and October.

Performed in London in March 2015, La Traviata has been screening in cinemas since the 13th May. This weekend is the final weekend of screenings. The film be screened at the Event cinemas Macquarie Centre and Cronulla, both days at 3pm.
