ENDANGERED PRODUCTIONS : IT’S SO LAST CENTURY

Following the resounding success of their Peer Gynt at the Paddington RSL in 2022, Endangered Productions returns with another performance designed to engage and entertain audiences.

This program features composers from the mid-20th Century – Gian Carlo Menotti, Lukas Foss and Samuel Barber – who wittily depict observations of New York society in three entertainingly reimagined productions – The Telephone, Introductions and Goodbyes, and A Hand of BridgeThe 9-minute ‘operas’ by Foss and Barber have libretti written by Menotti. His own composition, The Telephone, is the most well-known of these three.

At the same time, in Bavaria, their contemporary, Carl Orff, was experimenting with operatic theatre. His Carmina Burana is internationally acclaimed but this innovative composer’s other works have been neglected in Australia. This production of Orff’s fairy-tale opera The Clever One or Die Kluge uses a revised English translation by Music Director Peter Alexander and Artistic Director, Christine Logan.

Alexander is excited to conduct a 15-piece orchestra and 10 singers in the exceptional acoustics of the new ACO home, The Neilson at Walsh Bay Arts Precinct. He believes Sydney needs more venues like this – specifically designed to be used without amplification.

Alexander said, ‘Endangered Productions is passionate about keeping Western Art Music alive. We break down elitist perceptions and introduce audiences to unique works in relaxed, intimate venues. It’s a formula being used in the UK and Europe to encourage younger audiences – and it works.’

Logan added, ‘We chose these operas for their relevance and wit – both the libretti and music. In our quest to attract a new audience of younger people and curious newcomers, Endangered Productions produces works that debunk the perception that opera is obscure and musically intense.’

It’s So Last Century is an opportunity not to be missed. For lovers of classical music, this is a must, and for new audiences both young and old who want to discover the joy of operatic theatre, it’s a perfect introduction.

This quadruple bill will enrich the world of new and established lovers of fine music.

It’s So Last Century plays The Neilson, Wharf 2/3 on 17,18,19, November 2023. A short season so be sure not to miss out!
