DYMOCKS LITERARY LUNCHEON : GARY JUBELIN

This month’s Dymocks Literary Luncheon guest speaker was Gary Jubelin who spoke about his new publication BADNESS.

Jubelin, worked for over thirty years as a leading detective in the Homicide Squad. In 2020 he was found guilty of illicitly recording conversations with a witness. Jubelin received a hefty fine and a criminal record.

Since leaving the police force he has built up a career in the media, working in newspapers, television and podcasts.  His weekly podcast ‘I Catch Killers’  goes for an hour, and features interesting interviews.

BADNESS is Jubelin’s second book following on from  his first book  ‘I Catch Killers’ which  was published in 2020 and became a bestseller

He mainly spoke about how his perspective on law and order had changed a lot since he left the police force. Whilst working as a  policeman he was busy going from case to case with little time to think. The focus was on   arresting the criminals and getting them before the court.

Since he has left the Force he  has had time to reflect a lot on those who live on the ‘dark side’. He believes that most people are not evil, that they want to be good, but that they lose their way, they go off the rails and go deeper and deeper into their hole. Often it is to do with something that happened in their youth, that there wasn’t love, affection, security, a sense of belonging, growing up. He spoke about how important it is to catch people when they are young before they become set in their ways.

After Jubilen had finished his talk which he delivered in a forthright manner he opened up the room for questions.

Perhaps the most interesting question came from a woman who asked Jubilen whether he thought that the jail system that we have really worked. Jubilen said that generally he didn’t think so, that the prisoners leave the jail tougher and harder than when they went in and that there is a high rate of recidivism.

Also he mentioned about the cost of keeping someone in jail, up to $100,000 a year, which would easily cover for the prisoner to see a psychologist  as much as he needs to, in any given year .

The woman then said, maybe we should just reintroduce capital punishment. A bit of a throwaway line which broke  the tension and made everyone laugh.

All in all, an interesting luncheon with a guest speaker who in his career  has experienced some of the darkest aspects of life both on a professional and personal level.

The Gary Jubelin Literary Luncheon took place  on September 26, 2022 in the grand Ballroom at the Four Seasons Hotel.

The next two literary lunches are novelist Natasha Lester who will talk about her latest work of historical fiction THE THREE LIVES OF ALIZ ST PIERRE on Monday October 17, 2022 at 12.30pm at the Sofitel Wentworth Hotel.
