CLARA SCHUMANN’S 200TH ANNIVERSARY CONCERT

2019 marks the 200th anniversary of nineteenth century German Romantic composer and pianist Clara Schumann. Widely recognised for her virtuosity as a performer, influential pedagogy as a teacher, and success as a female composer, the impact of Clara Schumann’s work within the Western musical canon has been immense. In September we will participate in worldwide celebrations of her 200th Birthday, with a program dedicated entirely to her works, honouring her accomplishments and influence.

Inspired by Clara’s own practices to advance the concert format during her time, our vision is to create a one-of-a-kind event that will re-invent traditional formats into something accessible, enriching and engaging to a wider and contemporary audience.

More specifically, our aim is to provide a concert experience that has both entertainment value and educational purpose. To contribute more meaningfully to a culture where female composers are often under-represented, our responsibility lies in constructing a holistic perception of Clara Schumann as both the ‘artist’ and the ‘woman’. We believe that by presenting this event in a new and innovative way, audiences will be able to gain a deeper understanding of the music and culture (both past and present) which surrounds it.

Through our project, we also hope to increase the presence of youth within the Classical music industry and inspire other up-and-coming artists to lead the arts and cultural scene through their own unique ideas and events.

The concert will take place on the 14th September, 2019  between 6pm and 9pm at  the Verbrugghen Hall, Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
