CHARLIE AND BOOTS

Shane Jacobsen in CHARLIE AND BOOTS

Dean Murphy’s ‘Charlie and Boots’ sees Paul Hogan and Shane Jacobson play a father, Charlie, and a son, who goes by the name of Boots, go on a road trip that sees them travel all the way from regional Victoria to the Cape York Peninsula to fulfill a long held dream, to fish off the northern most tip of Australia. The trip is the brainchild of Boots who sees his father slowly going to pieces after the premature death of his wife after many years of marriage.

‘Charlie and Boots’ is standard regular road movie fare. This film has obviously been made with its eyes on the international market. There’s a laid-back chemistry between Hogan and Jacobson. There are lots of shots of the Australian countryside and landmark locations on the trip, including a ‘stopover’ at the Tamworth country music festival. On their travels, Charlie and Boots come across many old style Aussie characters along the way. Their experiences vary from the mundane pub lunch to some hair raising experiences at a country rodeo. Dale Cornelius’s jazzy soundtrack gives a nice feel to the film.

Go without any great expectations and you’ll enjoy a breezy ride as father and son reach their dream.
