ALLORA AND CALZADILLA : VARIATIONS ON ‘ODE TO JOY’

As part of  the Making Art Public – 50 years of Kaldor Public\ Art Projects, the Art Gallery of New South Wales is bringing to life some of those projects.

In this case it was Project 26. The full title of this recreation is Stop, repair, prepare: variations on ‘Ode to joy” for a prepared piano which  has never before been . seen in Sydney but was performed in Melbourne in 2012.

There is nothing more startling than walking into the entrance court of the Art Gallery to see a Dali-esque scene of a man seemingly amputated from the waist down emerging from a modified Bechstein grand piano playing variations on Beethoven’s Joy whilst the keyboard was upside down from the pianist’s point of view.

There are in fact a group of especially trained pianists and this piece was performed by Riley Irwin.

Even  more startling is that the pianist pushes the grand piano around the entire entrance court.

Italians Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla create works which are sometimes characterised by their sense of playfulness and use  of humour, very much in evidence in this piece.

The piano itself is on loan for the Kaldor Project from the Castello di Rivoli in Turin, Italy.
