1984 THE MUSICAL @ THE NEW THEATRE

These days a lot of works of literature are adapted into theatre, many into musical theatre. So I wasn’t greatly surprised when I received an invitation to see 1984 THE MUSICAL.

What makes this show very special is that this adaptation hasn’t come to us here from overseas, as is often the case, but is a homegrown creation by a n enterprising group of Sydney theatre makers.

Sydney University graduates Tom Davidson McLeod and Diana Reid wrote the adaptation and UTS graduate Riley McCullagh composed the music. The show was co-directed by Georgia Vella and Tom Davidson McLeod.

The cast of seventeen actors brought Orwell’s  vision to life led by Charlie Hollands as Winston were clearly directed and performed well.

The world  of the play came through clearly featuring  Orwell’s totalitarian state  where Big Brother is always watching.(the feature of the set was a large, interrogative eye staring out at the audience) and people are constantly  double thinking.

The songs, as well as being catchy, always moved the story forward and there were plenty of comic touches thrown into the mix.

This was an enterprising, engaging  night at the theatre. 1984  THE MUSICAL has an extensive season at the New Theatre, 542 King Street, Newtown until the 25th January playing Tuesdays to Saturday nights at 7.30pm and Sundays at 1pm and 7.30pm.
