This is one of those events that add a light touch to the week in, week out slog of journalism.
Ben and I drove across to Sydney’s Ice Zoo in Mascot to see the legendary Torvill and Dean give a group of young kids from the Ice Zoo’s Skating Academy a once in a lifetime skating lesson.
The spectators included invited media covering the event and more significantly adoriug parents, proudly watching their talented kids, all aged from 8 to 8 years old, being taught some moves by ice skating royalty.
This heart-warming event was a segue in to promoting Torvill and Dean’s 50th anniversary tour of Australia next year, with the banner OUR LAST DANCE. The ice skating couple, who still look in great shape, announced that they would be retiring in February this year at the time when they were performing in Sarajevo, commemorating their historic gold medal winning performance to Ravel’s Bolero at the 1984 Winter Olympics.
Their Last Dance shows will feature Torvill and Dean, accompanied by some of our finest skaters as they recreate some of their most memorable dances.
