Brava! Brava! Brava!
The highest grossing film in Italy last year, THERE’S STILL TOMORROW is a vibrant, audacious, enchanting drama starring the exquisite Paola Cortellesi in her directorial debut and it’s yours to enjoy at this year’s ST.Ali Italian Film Festival.
Cortellesi plays Delia living in a working-class community in Rome in the late 1940s – a city divided between the positive thrust of liberation and the deprivation and miseries of the war that has just ended.
The film begins in what initially looks like domestic bliss, but instead of a good morning kiss she receives a slap in the face from her domineering husband, Ivano.
Apart from this abusive spouse, Delia has to contend with a daughter’s disdain, two brattish sons, and an invalid Fascist father in law.
She rises above the daily grind and challenges of this taken for granted family life by squirreling away money she earns on various side hustles, confiding in a feisty best friend with whom she shares moments of levity, and harvesting hopes for her daughter Marcella to one day have a better life.
Delia deals stoically with the life fate has dealt her, the good, the bad, the ugly and the beautiful. Then one day a mysterious letter arrives, the contents of which continue to play mysteriously throughout the movie, causing conjecture and speculation in the audience to brilliant effect.
Shot in resplendent black and white by Davide Leone in the style of post-World War II Italian neorealist filmmakers, THERE’S STILL TOMORROW is a bittersweet and empowering epic tale tinged with a comedic irony.
Cortellessi’s choices as both director and performer are triumphantly tiered, an outstanding achievement both before and behind the camera. See THERE’S STILL TOMORROW today and you may well want to see it again tomorrow.
