KOSHERTHEATRESPORTS – the Jewish-comedy-themed spin-off from Sydney’s longest-running comedy show – returns to its home of Bondi Pavilion Theatre on Sunday 31 August as part of the Bondi Theatre Company’s Winter Comedy Cabaret Season.
Since its 1995 debut, the local version of the hit comedy impro game-show has featured a galaxy of star performers and celebrity judges including Osher Gunsberg, Libbi Gorr, Bianca Dye, Tara Moss, Henry Roth, Mia Friedman, the late Don Lane, Larry Emdur, the Umbilical Brothers, Wil Anderson, Monica Trapaga, singer-songwriter Lior & comedian Susie Youseff. This year’s judges are Wharf Revue legend Phil Scott, international piano icon Simon Tedeschi and local oncologist and Theatresports champion Liz Hovey.
Hosted by comedian David Smiedt with Theatresports veteran Geoff Sirmai as referee, the show boasts ‘the only kosher hams in town’.
Teams such as “Shmux in Tux”, “Yentl as Anything”, “Rabbi-Proof Fence”, “The Schnozbournes” and the “Red Hot Chilli Shleppers” have carved a niche for themselves with the show’s unique brand of ‘shtick’. With themes from Broadway to Sci-Fi, Film Noir to Horror (or is that hora?). This anniversary year it’s “Classic” Theatresports and the performers will create spontaneous comedy from audience suggestions, flying by the seat of their pants! Poems, songs, murder mysteries, love scenes and more – all at the drop of a yarmulkeh! Boo the judges, sing the anthem, have a ball!
After a break of 8 years, the hit show returns – by popular demand – as part of Bondi Theatre Company’s 2025 Winter Comedy & Cabaret season.
As always, team and audience prizes are rich as ever with theatre passes, holiday packages, exquisite Judaica art from the Sydney Jewish Museum and all sorts of yummy treats on offer including a Kosher Dinner for two at Shaffa and Soulfood vouchers.
“Theatresports is everyone’s favourite comedy gameshow,” says director Geoff Sirmai.
“So we say: when you’re on a good thing, add shtick to it!”
