THE DANGEROUS PET LOVER’S GUIDE TO SEA MONSTERS: LINDSAY HIRST, ILLUSTRATED BY ALICE MCKINLEY: THE ESSENTIAL SEA MONSTER HANDBOOK

This is a very handy guidebook to finding, naming, and caring for, your very own pet sea monster, and who doesn’t love a sea monster, am I right?

Of course, as the author tells us, sea monsters can be very ‘moody and menacing’, and care must be taken in choosing your sea monster (they can be slimy or spiky or smelly or snappy), but by following all the helpful tips provided by the author, it’s definitely possible to end up with a very friendly and caring pet. You just have to make sure to feed it properly, and that when you’re playing games with it, you must always let your sea monster win, because if you don’t, it will get very cross indeed. And we don’t want that!
The illustrations are wonderful – they’re full of life and action, and jam-packed with detail that both children and their adults can delight in as they explore each page. Along with the text, the illustrations also offer plenty of opportunities for any number of discussions … about pets and caring for them, about sea-life and the ocean, about competitiveness, and about the sheer joy of letting your imagination run wild.

This is charming book for kids. It’s lots of fun, and by the time you’ve finished reading it, you may well want to find a sea monster of your own.

This book is recommended for ages 3 to 7.
