It was a great program of stirring, inspiring music.First there was a very fine female composer Ethel Smyth’s MASS IN D MINOR.
During interval we had a chat with the couple sitting next to us, visiting from America. They were so happy to be taking in such beautiful music, in one of the world’s great opera houses.
After interval there was the total bliss of Beethoven’s masterpieces, the Choral finale on Schiller’s ODE TO JO, FROM SYMPHONY NO. 9.
Elizabeth Scott conducted the Sydney Youth Orchestra with members of the Sydney Philharmonia Orchestra and the Festival Chorus. In support were soprano Bronwyn Douglass, mezzo soprano Helen Sherman, tenor Bradley Daley and baritone Michael Honeyman.
The concert finished to the warmest applause. We took our time to leave, talking again to our American friends, who were going to go in search of the best vantage points in the Opera House to take photos of our harbour and the bridge
We then joined the throng of people walking down the long staircase flanking the Concert Hall, as some afternoon sunlight glinted through.
Everyone was in high spirits. There is a magnificence in hearing the voices in a fine choir, such as the Sydney Philharmonic Choirs, come together so beautifully. It is goosebumps stuff.
So glad I was there. The concert took place at the Concert Hall, Sydney Opera House on Saturday 26th October 2024 at 2pm.
Sydney Philharmonia’s next concert will be SHOWSTOPPERS, a concert celebrating the music of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s music. The concert will take place at Sydney Town Hall. There will be two concerts; Saturday 16th November at 7pm and then a matinee performance on Saturday 17th November at 2pm.
