SYDNEY FESTIVAL : TINA: A TROPICAL LOVE STORY @ WHARF THEATRE STC

Way back in the day, I would take myself out late at night in Sydney to experience the vibrant world of drag cabaret. Now, Ben Graetz is bringing the beauty of this art form to a much broader and more diverse audience through Tina – A Tropical Love Story. This dazzling production celebrates the unique culture of drag, blending the bold, out-and-proud energy popularized by the likes of RuPaul with the sardonic humour and satirical flair that define the genre. It’s cabaret reimagined, with a strong focus on narrative storytelling.

At the heart of the show is Graetz himself, performing as his alter ego, Miss Ellaneous reimagined as Tina Turner his Queen of Rock n Roll. True to cabaret tradition, Graetz takes on the role of Mistress of Ceremonies, hosting an evening filled with music, dance, and theatrical entertainment. The show pays tribute to Tina Turner, the legendary entertainer whose unforgettable 1993 open-air concert in Darwin left a lasting impression on a young Graetz. This formative experience is woven into the fabric of Tina – A Tropical Love Story, as Graetz channels Tina’s unstoppable spirit to share his own personal journey of self-discovery and artistry.

The production seamlessly celebrates First Nations culture, with Graetz’s story of finding confidence and expression in drag beautifully intertwined with Tina Turner’s legacy. Each performance also features guest artists from the drag, First Nations, and queer performance scenes, ensuring that the show feels fresh and locally relevant in every new location. The Sydney iteration includes stellar contributions from choreographer Sani Townson (of Bangarra Dance Theatre’s Horizon), singer-songwriters SIVILLION, the incredible Ursula Yovich, Sydney Dance Company performer Ryan Pearson, and more.

From live concert renditions to high-camp comedy, the show is a joyous blend of glamour and grit. The polished choreography, impeccable lip-syncing, and big “Tina” hair are all a feast for the senses. More than a mere tribute show, Tina – A Tropical Love Story is a heartfelt celebration of Tina Turner’s impact on Australian audiences and, more personally, on Graetz himself.

Audience members were encouraged to sing along, stand, and dance—and many eagerly did. The atmosphere was electric, a shared celebration of music, resilience, and individuality. Simply put, it was simply the best.
