Milan Ring premiered THE SOUND OF RAIN ON DUST, a cool sonic and light experience at ACO on the Pier’s The Neilson as part of the Sydney Festival 2026
ARIA-nominated Milan Ring is an accomplished composer, producer, mix engineer and musical director. Here she used alternative and electronic music, recordings from the natural world, ethereal vocals, and guitar to yield a sense of both vastness and intimacy
The performance reflecting grief and release was inspired by the by Martin Prechtel’s 2015 book: The Smell of Rain on Dust. Prechtel says, “Grief expressed out loud for someone we have lost, or a country or home we have lost, is in itself the greatest praise we could ever give them. Grief is praise, because it is the natural way love honors what it misses.” The performance’s atmosphere never became too dark in part due to the superb use of lightscape. It acknowledged the dark and mist, also reflecting dark waves and piercing searchlights.
The performance was staged in the round with Milan in the centre on a small square stage with her voice, electronic sound system and guitar. People lay or sat on mats with pillows around her – allowing the experience to move into their bodies. Overlooking this were others in the audience seated on the balcony level. Here the visual effect was more powerful – bodies at varying angles with the ever changing lightscape.
The opening long waves of sound like organ music welcomed the audience into a place of peace and reflection. This meditative quality gave way to plinking like drops of rain breaking the buildup of tension and perhaps symbolizing tears of grief and healing. Fragility, intensity and release came through the multi-layered vocals and music.
Hope and light at the end was marked by the raising of the blinds, letting the sunshine and daylight into the space –renewed.
After the hour performance, the audience eased back into the outside world with a complimentary herbal tea blended in collaboration by Tea in Season, as they reflected on their communal yet intimate experience.
It was a special interlude in the day.
Milan Ring performed THE SOUND OF RAIN ON DUST twice during the day on Sat 24 January at ACO Nielsen, The Pier, as part of the Sydney Festival 2026
