The Association of Community Theatre’s 12th Stagecraft conference will be held on Saturday the 21st and Sunday the 22nd of September at the National Institute of Dramatic Art.

Guest speakers include Composer/Writer Laura Murphy, and performers Wayne Scott Kermond, Geraldine Turner and Chloe Dallimore.

Delegates can choose from 16 electives including dance, directing, copyright, sound, lighting, clowning, choreography, costume design, make-up, social media, intimacy coaching, American accents, auditioning for a musical, prop making, stage management, stage safety and more.

The weekend includes meals and entertainment and costs just $175 for members.

Single day tickets and dinner only tickets are also available.On the Saturday night for ACT’s Hall of Fame awards/dinner, performers from the Inner-West Theatre Company’s production of Priscilla Queen of the Desert, North Shore Theatre Company’s season of We Will Rock You and Bankstown Theatre Company’s 75th anniversary season of Sweeney Todd will perform in front of delegates and ACT patron Nancye Hayes AM.

The conference has been held 12 times since 1998 but this is the first since the pandemic.

9:45 Keynote speaker is composer, lyricist, and theatre writer Laura Murphy – who will describe what she loves about community theatre and why she set her production of Zombies the Musical in one. 

10:30 Tim Cramsie will lead our Stage Safety Seminar highlighting what went wrong with recent film and stage disasters and what lessons can be learnt from them.

1130 Annual General Meeting of The Association of Community Theatre.

1230 Lunch and trade stalls.

  1. Musical Theatre Dance Workshop with Wayne-Scott Kermond.
  2. Directing Actors for the Stage with NIDA Lecturer Jo Turner.   (20 max)
  3. Let’s Put On A Show – hear from copyright agents MTIA, Origin, DSP and Laura Murphy.
  4. Sound Advice. Sean Clark, Col Peet and Andrew Crawford on opportunities for employment in technical theatre plus the latest on audio.

Electives to choose from Saturday 4:15 – 6:15pm

  1. Lighting Design Revolution – Brett Wheeler on how to light your show before you get into the theatre.
  2. Clowning : Release Your Inner Silliness NIDA Lecturer Rudolf Hendrikx. (20 max)

c  Directing and Choreographing a Musical : Wayne Scott Kermond and Katie Kermond.

  1. Costume Design with NIDA Lecturer Leah Giblin. (20 max)

Explore the processes of the designer in their quest to visually convey character through costume design. This workshop takes the form of a presentation.

  1. Make-Up Essentials with NIDA Lecturer Sandra Wograndl. (15 max)

Gain an insight into techniques used by professional make-up artists in the application of stage make-up. Learn some tricks of the trade and see the magic of make-up unfold! This workshop takes the form of a practical demonstration.

  1. Social Media and Publicity with The Willoughby Theatre Company’s Taz Bright and Journalist David Spicer.
  2. Creating a character with NIDA Lecturer Bethany Simons.(20 max)

Explore how the Stanislavski acting technique and physical and vocal skills are employed in the creation of truthful characters.

  1. Intimacy Coaching with Chloe Dallimore.

  1. Music Theatre Audition Masterclass with Geraldine Turner.
  2. Props Making and Effects with NIDA Lecturers Grace McCann & Caleb Jackson.(20 Max)

Discover the secrets of props making and special effects in the creation of NIDA’s production of Frankenstein. This workshop takes the form of a presentation

  1. General American Accents with NIDA Lecturer Laura Farrell. (20 max)

Explore the fundamental skills required for creating a General American accent.

  1. Stage Management with Col Peet and Andrew Davis.

Community theatre awards Forum. 4pm
