SIMPLY BRILL 2024 @ RIVERSIDE THEATRES PARRAMATTA

SIMPLY BRILL 2024 – THE TEENAGERS WHO STOLE ROCK N ROLL. These three acclaimed entertainers, Amelia Ryan, Michaela Burger and Michael Griffiths deliver impeccable performances, and the excellent production shines, giving a detailed pop music history lesson, with this joyous, triumphant and awe-inspiring celebration of the hit factory songwriters, who transformed 1960’s rock ‘n’ roll forever.

Theatrically presented, SIMPLY BRILL – with its dynamic blend of history, humour and heart – takes audiences on a thrilling ride from the humble beginnings of the music business in Tin Pan Alley, through to the dawn of the singer songwriter, all via the game-changing explosion of rock ‘n’ roll.

SIMPLY BRILL dramatically retells the birth of iconic songwriters, such as Bill Hayley and The Comets, Neil Sedaka, Bobby Darin, Carole King, Cynthia Weil, and Ellie Greenwich. These up and coming teenage songwriters gave voice to an entire generation with hits such as Rock Around The Clock, Splish Splash, Oh Carol, Will You Love Me Tomorrow?, You have Lost That Loving Feeling, River Deep Mountain High, and Leader of the Pack and more – all sublimely recreated with the vocal brilliance of Amelia, Michaela and Michael, together with their live five piece band. Highly Recommended. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Brill Building, in the 1950s and 1960s, was a a solitary and huge office building located on Broadway, in the heart of downtown New York City. During the glory days, the Brill Building was making polished radio-friendly pop, but from an age when songwriters sought to make records that spoke eye-to-eye with teenagers rather, than down to them, at the unofficial capitol of the American pop music industry, and the songs evoke the era with skill and demonstrates just how much great music poured out of one building in New York City.

Fans of 1960s pop and rock will find lots to like, as the building was home to a number of record companies and publishing firms, and many of the leading songwriters and producers of the day did business there, as pop hits were produced on a veritable assembly line. Writers came up with new tunes, arrangers figured out how to make them sound best on record, and producers recruited the singers and session musicians, who would put the magic into grooves that would spin in jukeboxes, radio stations, and portable phonographs around the country.

Hit songs from the days when the Brill Building was the center of the teen pop universe. The Brill Building had NUMBER ONE hits by Dion, Del Shannon, the Shirelles, Gene Pitney, Ben E. King, the Crystals, Little Eva, Jay and the Americans, Connie Francis. The playlist set, includes a few stars-to-be, such as Tony Orlando, Carole King, and Neil Sedaka, and also from Barry Mann, who would fare better as a songwriter in collaboration with Cynthia Weil.
