YOUTH WEEK

The world’s biggest short play festival is back in Sydney.

Short+Sweet 2025 is a celebration of play writing, plus the creation of original theatre.

Festival starts from – Thursday 13th February 2025 to Sunday 18th May 2025

In 2025 Short+Sweet features over 100 plays, in the span of just twelve weeks, all are competing for a spot in the Gala Finals, where we award the best of the best.

Each evening from 7pm, audiences will experience an eclectic mix of brand new Australian works, and THIS WEEK Short+Sweet Sydney Week Three – accent on youth AND features a slew of talent young creatives! Thursday to Sunday at 7pm, audiences will enjoy a line-up of new plays – all timed at under ten minutes and featuring young writers, directors and performers tackling such themes as a battle of two legendary Greek women; a hilarious date night wrecked by a foreboding fortune cookie; and young woman cramming for an exam as her boyfriend and bestie compete to distract her!

Full range of brand new works brought to the forefront, sharp comedies, existential dramas, surreal horror, poetry, musical, political and inspirational narratives, drive the eight week season.

(1) CHANGING BUSES
Written by Katrina Samaras
Directed by Colleen Willis
STARRING – Karys Kennedy, Rhiannon Jean and Max Shaw
Comedy – Bus journey martyrdom, with BOGAN Joan Of Arc. Audience comedy favourite, at the opening night performance.

(2) GOOD NIGHT SKY
Written by Erica Furgiuele
Directed by Thea Grace Ward and Lars Woerlee
STARRING – Thea Grace Ward and Lars Woerlee
Drama – Dot and Dash have been attached at the hip since birth, but college beckoned.

(3) THE LOST PRINCIPAL
Written and Directed by Jonathan Solomon
STARRING – Karen Firmstone, Alexandra McIntosh, Josiah Lucas and Steve Lu.
Comedy – Fictional Drama school play, storytelling with the nemesis.

(4) WANNABE ME
Written and Directed by Liron Peer
STARRING – Liron Peer and Isaac Niven
Drama – Storytelling – You can’t escape “Being Amy Winehouse”.

(5) MISFORTUNE
Written by Mark Harvey Levine
Directed by Charlotte McKee-Wright
STARRING – Julia Boyd, Angus Farrand, Lily Li, Katelyn Storey and Sebastian Lodge
Comedy – Fictional murder via repeated fortunes, repeated inside each Fortune Cookie.

(6) THE MORNING AFTER
Written and Directed by Sandra Bass
STARRING – Laura Wallace and Simon Pearce
Comedy – About the night before, with the Marriage Proposal gone bad.

(7) FATE DEMANDS IT
Written by Carolynne Wilcox
Directed by Taylor Herbertson
STARRING – Sarah Kelly and Rhiannon MacLeod-Green
Drama – Storytelling – women cursed to see the future, the Trojan War revealed. Audience drama favourite, at the opening night performance.

(8) ORACLE
ITC = Manly Theatre Group
Written and Directed by Stef Savanah
STARRING – Ella Roper and Tyler Cronan
Drama – Writing essay in Coffee Shop, but with multiple messages within her coffee cup.

(9) WHEEL OF FORTUNE
Written by Scott Sickles
Directed by Henry Lopez Lopez
STARRING – Max Shaw and Lara Heath
Comedy – Debating Death with Death, via playing Chess.

EXPECT – Some plays may contain “crude indecent” adult themes, and strong highly offensive profanities, offensive/coarse language, offensive foul material/themes, moderate alcohol usage, and issues relating to trauma. Recommended only for persons over the age of 18.

The festival’s dynamic season continues with dedicated programs showcasing emerging talent during Youth Week (( 6-9 March 2025 )) and innovative Shakespeare interpretations in ‘Bite-sized Bard’ (( 4-7 April 2025 )), curated by Come You Spirit’s Jo Bloom.

May brings a spectacular Cabaret Week (( 5-8 May 2025 )), featuring an array of singers, dancers, and multidisciplinary artists.

The season culminates in the highly anticipated Semi-Finals and Gala Finals (( 16+17 May 2025 )), where the festival’s most outstanding performances compete for top honours.
