SHORT AND SWEET THEATRE 2025 – SYDNEY WEEK FOUR @ TURNER HALL THEATRE

The world’s biggest short play festival is back in Sydney.

Short+Sweet 2025 is a celebration of play writing, plus the creation of original theatre.

Festival starts from – Thursday 13th February 2025 to Sunday 18th May 2025

In 2025 Short+Sweet features over 100 plays, in the span of just twelve weeks, all are competing for a spot in the Gala Finals, where we award the best of the best.

Each evening from 7pm, audiences will experience an eclectic mix of brand new Australian works. Thursday to Sunday at 7pm, EACH WEEK audiences will enjoy a line-up of brand new plays – all timed at under ten minutes and featuring young writers, directors and performers tackling tropes.

Full range of brand new works brought to the forefront, sharp comedies, existential dramas, surreal horror, poetry, musical, political and inspirational narratives, drive the eight week season.

(1) FANTASY

STARRING – Jody Crooks, David Hodgkins, David Loney and Cris Bocchi
A dinner party turns fantasy into a surprise reality.

(2) THE CLEANER
Written by Helen Hopcroft
Directed by Owen Gill
STARRING – Avril Vorsay
The Cleaner is a tragi-comic tale of love, dysfunctional relationships, orange oil and the stuff you’d rather forget.

(3) ALAN HAS LEFT THE CHAT
Written by Nicky Denovan
Directed by Oliver Harcourt-Ham
STARRING – Sora Wakaki, Simon Pearce and Angelo Morton
Stuart’s career is heading in the right direction, but a shocking revelation by boss Alan sparks a chain of events that could change the course of destiny for everyone.

(4) A ROCK IN A HARD PLACE
Written by Graham Yates
Directed by Michael Gooley
STARRING – Ben Moss and Graham Yates
A lifelong pattern of stunted communication between a father and his son comes to a head in this moment of yearning for a display of affection.

(5) KRAKEN
Written by Helen Hopcroft

STARRING – Tony Jozef
An old sailor spins a salty tale involving the biggest whale anyone’s ever seen, a ravenous sea monster and an intransigent ship’s captain.

(6) A FIRST-DRAFT SECOND-RATE LOVE STORY
Written by John Busser
Directed by PJ Collins
STARRING – Nicholas Gledhill, Kate Mills, Manny Kats, PJ Collins and Anna Buckley
Will our lovers (one handed stevedore John and multiple named ingenue Vivian/Miriam/Marian) find the love that’s eluded them for so long, or will Vivian’s shocking past prove too much? Stay tuned for another exciting updated draft which may or may not answer those questions.

Three creative executives has 10 minutes to make a public announcement about an unstated catastrophe that has befallen their autocratic leader.

(10) I TERRIBLY MISS YOU

Mary is locked up. Ruth is locked out. Tonight, they’re both trapped.

(11) MONA LISA IN A RED DRESS

what it looks like with my new red dress?

(12) BROWN BAG
Written by Jeff Locker
Directed by Kate Stewart
STARRING – Liron Peer and Angus Farrand
A lonely man enters a 1950s mom-n-pop shop carrying a mysterious package in hopes of making a curious – and desperately needed – exchange.

EXPECT – Some plays may contain “crude indecent” adult themes, and strong highly offensive profanities, offensive/coarse language, offensive foul material/themes, moderate alcohol usage, and issues relating to trauma. Recommended only for persons over the age of 18.

The festival’s dynamic season continues with dedicated programs showcasing emerging talent during Youth Week (( 6-9 March 2025 )) and innovative Shakespeare interpretations in ‘Bite-sized Bard’ (( 4-7 April 2025 )), curated by Come You Spirit’s Jo Bloom.

May brings a spectacular Cabaret Week (( 5-8 May 2025 )), featuring an array of singers, dancers, and multidisciplinary artists.

The season culminates in the highly anticipated Semi-Finals and Gala Finals (( 16+17 May 2025 )), where the festival’s most outstanding performances compete for top honours.
